New USMC FAOA Board Member

Brigadier General Christopher Cortez is currently assigned as the Director, Strategy and Plans Division, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. He was commissioned via the Platoon Leader's Class Program in 1971 from Marietta College in Ohio.

His Fleet Marine Force tours include duty as a rifle platoon commander, rifle company executive officer and battalion adjutant, rifle company commander, weapons company commander, battalion operations officer, battalion executive officer, battalion commander, G-3, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, and Commanding Officer, 3rd Marines (Rein). While commanding 1st Bn., 5th Marines, his unit deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/ Storm. He later served as Chief of Staff for I Marine Expeditionary Force , then became Assistant Division Commander, 1st Marine Division. In February, March and April 1998, he deployed to Southwest Asia with Third Army Headquarters serving as Chief of Staff, Coalition Task Force, Kuwait.

Other tours have included recruiting officer duty in Los Angeles, instructor duty in the U.S. Army School of the Americas in Panama, action officer for Central/South America at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Executive Assistant and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff, U.S. Pacific Command. He has attended The Basic School , Amphibious Warfare School , Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the Inter-American Defense College in Washington, D.C.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit with Combat "V"(two Gold Stars); Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; and Combat Action Ribbon. (Revised June 1, 1998)
