It took author Judith Heimann ten years on three continents and more than 70 transcribed interviews to draw out the facts of this amazing tale. She tracked down all the surviving airmen and almost all the surviving ex-headhunters who are part of the story; she interviewed the latter in Borneo in their lingua franca, Malay. In the course of her research she also discovered surprising differences in how memory works among veteran Western soldiers and pre-literate native guerrillas.
Ms. Heimann is both a career diplomat and a writer of several books of non-fiction. One of the first “tandem” wives in the Foreign Service, she served in Western Europe, Central Africa and Southeast Asia.
